South boys tennis looking to be more competitive

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — South Laurel boys’ tennis will be very young this season, but they do return some experience.

“Five of our top six are sophomore’s or less,” Coach Larry Finley said.  “We lost the Phelps’s twins and are now rebuilding.  I am excited about this year because several of our top players have put the work in during the off-season.  That is one change we made this year.  At the end of the season last year we decided we had to do more to be competitive in this region.”

Finley will look to players like Ben Tonkel, Plinio Tuta, Ethan Carnahan,  Andrew Watts and Christian Helton, who have all put in the work to improve their game.

“And we have some newcomers this year such as DJ Powell, Lucas Maxey, Parker Bond, and Taylor Payne who are expected to contribute heavily,” Finley said.

South Laurel will open its season March 17 against Corbin.
