South Laurel back on track

Lady Cards slip past Madison Central, 3-2

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — After falling behind 2-1 in the fifth inning, the South Laurel Lady Cardinals rallied to take a 3-2 win over Madison Central Thursday at North Laurel.

“It was a good win for us,” South Laurel coach James Burns said. “We played good defense and hit the ball well.”

While his team hit the ball well, they still had trouble scoring runs, leaving nine runners stranded. Burns said getting a two-out hit with runners on base has been his team’s Achilles heel.

South Laurel (20-6) was coming off a 9-5 loss to Madison Southern earlier in the week, a game that saw them without the services of Chelsea Wemes. Against the Lady Indians, South was shorthanded again, as Amber Hyde wasn’t available.

Hagan Burns got the win for South, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six. Both runs were earned, unlike in the loss against Madison Southern, where South committing five errors and only two of the nine runs were earned. She also helped herself at the plate with two doubles and an RBI. Brittany Vandeventer went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Nell Murray and Bailey Miller both had doubles in the win.

The Lady Cards were scheduled to play in the Somerset Invitational over the weekend, then travel to Madison Southern tonight before hosting Middlesboro on Tuesday.

South will then host Southwestern Thursday before wrapping up the regular season at Estill County Friday then home against Rockcastle County on Saturday.
