LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
A doubleheader sweep against Wayne County Sunday gave North Laurel the district title and a trip to South Oldham for the boy’s Big League state tournament.
North Laurel took the first game, 13-3, and the second, 15-2. Players from North Laurel, South Laurel and Harlan County make up the Big League team.
Marcus Carson got the win in the first game, and he also scored two runs. Taylor Bowling was the winning pitcher in the second game, and he also scored twice.
North Laurel used the long ball to dispose of Wayne County, hitting six home runs. Alex Sears and Trent Abner both went yard twice, while Carson, John Evans, Ethan Eversole and Ryan Shears also homer.
In two games, North Laurel banged out 13 extra base hits.
In game one, North Laurel jumped on top early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by run scoring doubles by Eversole and Abner. A two-run homer from Evans in the third upped the lead to 6-0. North then scored seven more runs, including homers by Sears and Abner, over the next two innings to take the 13-3 win. Wayne County scored all three of its runs in the fifth inning.
Game two saw North Laurel build a 15-2 lead before the game was delayed due to lightning in the fourth inning. Wayne County decided it didn’t want to wait out the delay and North Laurel took the win and the district title.
Sears, Carson and Shears all homered in game two, while Zach Hurley and Abner doubled.
