Warmer weather not working for North Laurel

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla— North Laurel dropped its opening game to Marshall County 7-0 in the Florida Softball Beach Bash at Fort Walton Beach.

“We had error after error after error,” North Laurel coach Becki Osborne said. “We’re just not playing good right now.”

Marshall County came into the game with just one loss on the season. It was the fourth loss in five games for the Lady Jaguars (3-4), who opened the season with a pair of wins.

“There is something missing. They don’t have that fire they had last year to put a team away quick and finish them up,” Osborne said.

Starting pitcher Megan Baldwin suffered an elbow injury in second inning. North Laurel was already trailing when Mikayla Vires took over in relief. Vires also pitched the junior varsity game. Baldwin’s status for the rest of the tournament has not been determined. But Osborne has more questions than who will be pitching. She is trying to find a way to jump start a team that is replacing just one senior from a team that lost just seven games all of last season.

“We don’t get shut out 7-0. Honestly, that’s not something that happens,” Osborne said. “We have the talent. There comes a time that talent isn’t going to carry you.”

The Lady Jaguars had two games scheduled for Tuesday, Obion County Central (TN) and Crestview (FL). The spring break trip will wrap up with games Wednesday against North Hardin and Thursday against Fort Walton Beach.
