LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
WILLIAMSBURG—South Laurel swept its season series with Williamsburg Tuesday with a 12-0 win over the Yellowjackets.
“We played well,” South Laurel coach Wynn Harris said. “Got a great pitching outing from both Trey Martin (four innings) and Quinton Barnett (one inning). We were able to put the ball in play and pressure their defense. I was pleased with the overall way that we ran the bases.”
The Cardinals were helped along by nine Williamsburg errors.
South scored a run in the first when Joe Gaines tripled to right center and scored on a passed ball. The Cards added three more runs in the second when Trey Martin reached on an error, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a dropped fly ball of the bat of Austin Moore to left field. Taylor Morris, running for Moore, scored on another passed ball. Zach Allen reached on a walk and scored on a Trent Abner single to left center.
In the fourth, Moore led off with a single, and Morris again came into run for the South catcher. Morris stole second, and Allen followed with a walk. Both runners moved up on a passed ball.
Brennan Miller grounded out to first, scoring Morris to make it 5-0. Abner then continued his hot bat with a double to left center to score Allen for the 6-0 lead.
The Cards broke things open in the fifth, scoring six runs, all with two outs.
Martin started things out with a single to left. Moore walked, then Allen reached on an error to load the bases for Matt Slavey, who doubled to left to score two runs. Miller reached on an infield single that plated a run, and Abner reached on another error. Gaines then drove in a run with a single to left to make the final 12-0. The Cards improved to 9-3 on the season and 2-0 in district play.
“It’s good to start out with two wins in the district,” Harris said. “It helps us to control our own destiny later on in the year. We have been playing well and getting better the last two weeks.”
Martin pitched four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out five. Barnett closed out of the game in the fifth.
The Cards were scheduled to travel to Harlan County tonight and host Somerset Saturday at 3 p.m.
