Cards complete sweep of Yellowjackets

Solid performance lifts South Laurel past W’burg, 10-0

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — “A complete opposite of last night.”

That’s how South Laurel coach Wynn Harris described his team’s 10-0 win over Williamsburg, the second straight night the Cards beat the Yellowjackets. South won on Monday night, 10-5.

The difference was the level of play the Cardinals showed in going 2-0 in district play.

“The energy and intensity was there,” Harris said. “The overall enjoyment of the game was there.”

Trey Martin picked up the win, throwing a complete one-hitter. He struck out five and walked just one. The lone hit came from Jared Barton, who led off the game with a single.

“We’ve been getting that from him all season,” Harris said of his pitcher’s performance. “He’s been very consistent on the mound. We would like for him to go deeper in games.”

The Cardinals (13-5, 2-0) scored in every inning of this five inning game, including four in the second and three in the fifth.

Trent Abner, coming off a two-hit night in Monday’s win (a homer and double) continued swinging a hot bat, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a single. He also walked once, scored two runs and drove in a run. He started Tuesday night’s game with a double to lead off the bottom of the first and scored on a single by Joe Gaines.

“It makes it easy when your lead-off guy leads the game off with a double,” Harris said. “He makes us a better team and brings a lot of positives.”

Gaines also had a good night at the dish with two singles and four RBIs, while Chase McWhorter had a double, home run and scored three runs.

“It was an all-around good performance at every position,” Harris said. “Every number in our order helped us win.”

The Cards touched Jonathan Teague for four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-0 lead. This time it was McWhorter leading off the inning with a double and he would score when Teague hit him at third base on a pick-off attempt and the ball went into shallow left field.

Drew Irvin walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by Martin. Zach Allen followed with a single to left, then Abner hit his second double of the game, putting runners on second and third and bringing Gaines to the plate.

A sacrifice fly by the South secondbaseman scored Allen, and when Alex Sears singled to right, Abner came home for the 5-0 lead.

Martin would retire the side in the top of the third, including striking out Michael Rose and Dalton Sizemore.

With one out in the bottom of the inning, McWhorter walked then advanced to third when a pick-off attempt at first got past the firstbasemen. A sacrifice fly by Irvin brought in South’s sixth run.

Another 1-2-3 inning by Martin in the fourth was highlighted by an exceptional over-the-shoulder catch by shortstop Sears in shallow left field on a soft fly ball off the bat of Micah Purdie that looked destined to fall for a base hit.

South make it 7-0 in the bottom of the inning as Allen walked to lead things off and scored when Gaines grounded out second to first.

The Cardinals ended the game with the Mercy Rule in the bottom of the fifth when they tacked on three more runs to make the final 10-0.

With one out, McWhorter took a 3-1 offering from Teague and deposited it over the centerfield fence to make it 8-0. That was all for Teague as Logan Hamblin came in to relieve him.

But Hamblin would walk Irvin and Martin before getting Allen to fly out for the second out of the inning. A walk to Abner loaded the bases for Gaines, who stroked a two-run single to right, scoring Irvin and Matthew Slavey (running for Martin).

The Cardinals are scheduled to travel to Jackson County tonight, then have two big district games against Corbin Monday and Tuesday. Monday’s game will be at the Redhounds.

“I told the team we control our own destiny,” Harris said. “If we continue to win you know we are going to get a No. 1 or  2 seed.”
