Osborne steps down as NL softball coach

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — With the start of a new school year just a few weeks away, North Laurel will have some new faces guiding its sports teams, and one familiar one leaving.

Softball coach Becky Abner Osborne resigned last Thursday, according to North Laurel Athletics Director Jimmy Durham. Osborne, a former Miss Kentucky Softball and a star player at North Laurel, spent two years coaching the Lady Jaguars. Osborne said the possible employment transfer of her husband was the main reason for her decision to resign.

“Having to deal with my husband’s job is the main reason I’m letting the position go,” Osborne said. “My husband is in Miamisburg, Ohio right now and when he’s finished there he will probably be transferred to Bowling Green.” She added that her husband works Sunday through Friday and her and their children only get to see him six or eight times a month.

Osborne was elected into the Kentucky Softball Hall of Fame in 2007. She was also a former high school all-American, Kentucky Gatorade Player of the Year, and KHSAA State Tournament MVP and champion as a member of the North Laurel team that won it in 2001.

Osborne said she will miss the girls on her team more than anything.

“Being a part of a team is something special and we have a good group of girls at North Laurel,” Osborne said. During her two years at North Laurel, she went 61-20-1 with two district titles, one region title, and one trip to the state tournament, where North went 3-2.

Durham said a formal search for a new coach began on Monday.

Durham also recently announced the hiring of several new coaches for the upcoming school year.

Eddie Hauser has been hired as the new girls’ golf coach, with Erin Powers hired as his assistant. Former North Laurel boys’ basketball coach Jim Conway will take over as head coach of the boys’ golf team. Mallory Head has been hired to be an assistant boys and girls tennis coach and assistant dance coach.
