Lady Cards stay perfect

South Laurel overcomes short bench, heat, to beat Boone County, 3-0

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — The Karli Parker Express continues to roll on as she scored all three goals in South Laurel’s 3-0 win over visiting Boone County Saturday.

In three games, the talented junior has scored 13 of South Laurel’s 17 goals. While she has done the bulk of the scoring, Coach Todd White was quick to point out that the entire team is contributing, especially in this game where the Lady Cards were without three players and dressed only 14 for the match. That left them three substitutes on a very hot day.

“It’s good to have a player like Karli, but it takes a whole team to win,” White said. “From almost start to finish we came out and took it to them (Boone). The heat did get to us, and we bent but never broke. The players didn’t complain even though I had to put some of them in different positions. They did what they had to do.”

White said he used the United States National Team as an example for his team on this challenging day.

“Abby (Wambach) and Alex (Morgan) never complain about the heat,” White said. “They go out and do their job and when the game ends they are smiling. They are good roles models.”

Two of Parker’s goals came in the first half, in the 9th and 40th minutes, to give the Lady Cards a 2-0 advantage at the break. Her third goal came one minute into the second half to up the lead to 3-0. From there it was the defense that stepped up and kept the Lady Rebels off the scoreboard.

“Baily (Miller, South’s keeper) said this was the best game our defense has played,” White said. “They all covered for each other. Alex Davenport stepped up; I can see her role increasing. With three players missing, we had to become mentally tough and that’s what we are doing.”

White said he also saw the level of playing improving in his team and that the rest of the state is starting to take notice.

“We have to take pride in the fact that we are from an area that doesn’t take notice and if our town doesn’t take notice then the rest of the state will,” White said.

The Lady Cardinals played host to Southwestern Tuesday night and will be at Madison Southern Thursday.
