Lady Jags earn third straight win

North Laurel takes down Estill County, 2-0

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — North Laurel rolled to its third straight win and eighth straight set without a loss by knocking off Estill County Monday (25-12, 25-14). The win pushed the Lady Jaguars (6-5) record back over .500 going into a showdown with rival South Laurel.

“I’m pretty pleased,” North Laurel coach Ali Ray said. “We came out kind of flat tonight, but I gave them off Friday because we had a lot of people sick and a lot of injuries. It was an extra day to rest and a chance to kind of get away from each other, so I expected the flatness.”

North Laurel looked especially flat on serves as it missed on its first three attempts. Those mistakes would allow Estill County to take an early lead by as many as four points. Once the serves started to find their mark, North Laurel would take the lead and never let it go.

“I told them I don’t care if it’s aces tonight, just get it in. Make them make a mistake,” Ray said.

The Lady Jaguars took their first lead with T.J. Stuber serving. Stuber served three straight points with one ace as North Laurel went ahead for the first time 9-8.

“T.J. is our leader, so whatever she does we usually follow,” Ray said.

Estill County was still in the game, trailing 14-11, when Ashley Wyatt served six straight points with two aces. The Lady Jaguars were controlling the net when the serves were true. Miranda Browning recorded five kills and a block in the first set. The set ended with two Browning kills in the 25-12 win.

The Lady Jaguars never trailed in the second set with only two bad serves costing them points. Again the play at the net would be big with Kelsey Hacker, Samantha Napier, and Browning recording kills.

“We had some really good plays at the net, some long volleys, it was good to see that,” Ray said.

Three long volleys were kept alive by diving digs from Wyatt.

North Laurel held an 11-9 edge when Daylen Gilbert took the serve. Gilbert served nine straight points with the last two aces as the Lady Jaguars opened a comfortable lead.

Estill County requested the match be just two sets instead of three due to their length of drive.

North Laurel was scheduled to play at South Laurel Tuesday with hopes of ending a long losing streak to the Lady Cardinals. The Lady Jaguars will host Monticello on Thursday.
