Irvin has big day to lead Cards past Redhounds, 12-8

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — CORBIN—South Laurel took an early led then held on for a 12-8 win over Corbin Monday night.

The win gives the Cardinals a 3-0 district record with another game against the Redhounds scheduled for Tuesday night.

Daniel Neal started for the Cardinals, but was relieved by Charlie Davis in the fifth inning.

“Daniel kind of labored today, but he did what a starting pitcher needs to do,” South Laurel coach Wynn Harris said. “He got us deep into the ball game. Charlie came in and made some big pitches to some big time hitters. I’m really proud of him.”

South hung six runs on Corbin in the top of the first, highlighted by a three-run triple off the bat of Drew Irvin.

But Corbin came right back in the bottom of the second scoring four runs on four hits to close the gap to 6-4.

In the top of the third, South scored two more runs to push its lead to 8-4. Chase McWhorter singled and was driven in by another Irvin triple. Daniel Skinner then followed with an RBI single.

Trailing 9-4, Corbin came back in the fourth with four runs, closing the gap to 9-8. But South would add three runs in the fifth to make it 12-8. Alex Sears had an RBI double and McWhorter followed with an RBI double.

“Corbin is a well-coached team,” Harris said. “We were able to gather our composure in the last couple of innings. We were always able to respond when they pushed us.”
