LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Coming off three bruising losses, North Laurel got just what it needed with an 8-1 win over Hazard Tuesday.

“That was a very good game for us,” North Laurel coach Becki Woodworth said. “We had moments that we looked really, really good and moments that did not look so well.”

The good moments included goals from six different players and some of the best passing the Lady Jaguars have displayed this season.

“We had eight goals and six scorers. That is awesome when you have that many girls getting the ball in the back of the net you know you are moving the ball around and playing well together,” Woodworth said.

Mollie Dotson scored three goals for the Lady Jaguars and Chelsey Hensley scored a pair. There were two goals in particular that stood out to Woodworth.

“Sidney (Reed) taking a corner and scoring off the same corner is a pretty good goal. And that came off of a beautiful header by Mollie that just got deflected or that could have been an even more beautiful goal,” Woodworth said.

Reed, possibly the team’s fastest player, spent much more time on offense than usual Tuesday.

“Sidney brings a lot of energy to whatever part of the field she is on. We could definitely use that on the offensive end,” Woodworth said.

The other goal that stood out to Woodworth was one of two by Hensley.

“The keeper made a beautiful save on a breakaway by Sam (Helton) and Chelsey very calmly placed it in the back of the net,” Woodworth said.

The passing that allowed six different players to score is something Woodworth would like to see more often. She thinks it could also happen against teams that play quicker than Hazard.

“They have the potential to pass that way against other teams as well. It is just believing they have the potential. One thing that makes it easier against Hazard is the game is slower. They don’t have to plan their passes one step ahead,” Woodworth said. “We have to learn how to receive a pass and know where it is going before we actually have it.”

Helton scored the first goal at the 25 minute mark on a follow when Dotson’s shot caught the cross bar. The second goal came at the 17:05 mark when Bella Delapena’s corner kick came back to her for a long shot over the keeper. Delapena got an assist on the next goal with a pass to Rosie Ellison for her first goal of the season.

Dotson came up big in the final minutes of the half juking three defenders with foot-to-foot dribbling for a goal. Dotson would score again just before the whistle sounded to end the half and give North Laurel the 5-0 lead.

Carmen Shepherd broke the shutout for Hazard on a goal with 25 minutes to play. North Laurel would get that goal back with 6:16 to play when Hensley connected on a running kick. The Lady Jaguars closed out the scoring with the Reed’s goal on a corner and Hensley with a follow.

North Laurel was scheduled to open district play Thursday against Whitley County. The Lady Jaguars will travel to Wayne County Tuesday.
