Moore captures girls’ title

North Laurel qualifies as a team for girls' state golf tournament

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — SOMERSET—North Laurel’s Caroline Moore became the second Lady Jaguar to capture a region title, while her team qualified for the state tournament after Region 9 play at General Burnside Island State Park Monday.

Aubree Moore won the girls’ region back in 2001.

Moore beat Pulaski County’s Elsa Moberly by one stroke, 74 to 75, to capture her first region title. As a team, the Lady Jaguars finished in second with a 346.

“The girls played very well today,” North Laurel coach Karen Moore said “For the past three weeks the girls have been working really hard on both the physical and mental side of the game. On Saturday we finished fourth in a tournament in Nicholasville on a very windy and difficult course.”

Katie Bowling shot an 82, Lynsey Kraftick, 85, Caitlin Gibson, 105, and Brianna Valentine, 126.

“It was our lowest score of the season,” Moore said. “We knew we had a chance to go to state if we stayed patient and played one shot at a time. And that’s what they did today. I’m very proud of the girls. Their work paid off and we peaked at just the right time. We were very fortunate to finish ahead of two really strong teams in Williamsburg and Rockcastle County. To my knowledge this is the first time the North girls have ever qualified as a team.”

Moore shot a 36 on the front nine and a 38 on the back, while Moberly shot a 38 and 37.

South Laurel’s Emily Sharpe finished with a 122.

The Lady Jaguars will now be preparing for the state tournament, which will be held at the Bowling Green Country Club October 1-3.
