LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — BEREA—For South Laurel coach Konnie Snyder, her team’s stay in the Berea Lady Pirate Holiday Classic was a bag of mixed results.

“We played well early with wins against good competition,” Snyder said. “After that, no so good.”

After beating Bryan Station to open the tournament, the Lady Cards came back Saturday morning to down Powell County in a thriller, 44-43. South then fell to Notre Dame, 50-28, and then to Corbin in the third place game, 48-35.

“We had no energy, didn’t think well and didn’t play well,” Snyder said of her team’s loss to Corbin.

The Lady Redhounds led 21-8 at the half before South got its offense somewhat going in the third quarter, scoring 14 points, but couldn’t overcome that early deficit and fell, 48-35.

Taylor Arthur led South with 16 points, while Karli Parker chipped in with 11, including three 3-pointers. Miranda Wilson led Corbin with 26 points.

“We didn’t play well or shoot well,” Snyder said of her team’s loss to Notre Dame.

Notre Dame led 10-4 after one, then used a 17-8 second quarter to hold a 27-12 lead at the half.

Things didn’t get any better in the second half, where Notre Dame outscored South, 22-16, to wrap-up the 49-28 win.

Arthur again led South with 13 points. Notre Dame had nine player score, led by Olivia Voskuhl’s 12 and Kindsey Bernhard’s 10.

With 12 seconds left in Saturday morning’s game, the Lady Cards were down one to Powell County. South needed to go the full length of the court to either tie or take the lead.

Cassandra Johnson drove to the basket and was fouled, sending her to the line for two free throws and 3.9 seconds left.

Johnson missed the first but made the second to tie the game. South then pressed the inbound resulting in a steal. The Lady Cards quickly called a time out with .2 seconds left.

“We set up a play,” Snyder said. “Then Powell was whistled for a hold on Taylor (Arthur) before the ball was inbounded.”

The Powell County coach wasn’t pleased with the call and threw a dry eraser on the floor, resulting in a technical foul.

Arthur went to the line first to shoot the bonus due to the holding call, but she missed the first shot. That sent Johnson to the line for the technical free throws. She missed the first, but sank the second for a 44-43 lead. South then threw the ball in to end the game and get the win.

“That was probably the most exciting finish to a game that I’ve ever been in,” Snyder said.

Arthur led South with 19 points, while Johnson added 9. Keeley Rogers led Powell County with 24 points.

South led 16-9 after one, but trailed at the half, 25-22. A 13-10 third quarter tied the game, 35-35, heading into the fourth quarter.

South played host to Knox Central Tuesday night and will travel to Williamsburg Friday.
