Miller uses last year’s defeat as motivation for this year’s win

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — At last year’s Pepsi/Gatorade 5K, Brennan Miller finished in ninth place.

Miller had planned on winning the race, and when he didn’t, he began his preparation for this year’s race.

“I was determined to win this year’s race,” Miller said after crossing the finish line in 19:09 to capture the annual race held during the World Chicken Festival. He shaved over a minute off last year’s time, which was 20:11.

Miller said last year he started out too quickly and used up a lot of his energy early in the race and was overtaken by more experienced runners. He was determined not to repeat that mistake this year.

David Hayes finished in second place, 13 seconds behind Miller. Miller said he didn’t think he could have won if it hadn’t been for Hayes.

“I probably wouldn’t have won if he didn’t push me,” Miller said. “We battled back-and-forth through the whole race and I took him on the last two hills. He gave me trouble but I pulled it together at the end.”

Samantha Hurst was the first female finisher with a time of 22:16, just edging out Sheri Rawlings, who finished in 22:22.

In all, 144 runners competed in this year’s event, up from last year’s 104.

The race was sponsored by: Pepsi Cola Bottling Co., Donald K. Johnson, DMD, Cook Tire Inc., Senture, Daddy Yo’s, Shoe-Inn, Baptist Regional Medical, Modern Dental Solutions, Gatorade, Jackie Steele, Law Offices of P. Brian Couch, Classic Metal Vault, Weaver’s Hot Dogs, PT Pro’s, 101.9 “The Bandit”, JP Technical Services, Smokey Bear’s BBQ, 84 Lumber, El Dorado Mexican Restaurant, Fire Restoration Experts, The Job Shop, Inc., CSX, Martin’s Peterbilt of East Ky., Finley’s Fun Center, Technical Staffing Solutions, Don & Kim Chaney, Regency Cinema 8, Dino’s Italian Restaurant.
