LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — WILLIAMSBURG—By the time half rolled around in Friday night’s 50th District tussle between South Laurel and Williamsburg, the Lady Cardinals were handily in front, 32-10.

But the Lady Yellowjackets made a game of it in the second half, outscoring South Laurel, 26-17. It wasn’t enough to pull out a win, but it did make the final more respectable, as the Lady Cards won, 49-36.

“We are still lacking that killer instinct,” South Laurel coach Konnie Snyder said. “In the first half our intensity was up, but in the second half we had trouble finishing and didn’t hit the bucket well.”

Neither team exactly set the gym on fire with their shooting. The Lady Cards shot 28 percent, while Williamsburg shot 28.3 percent.

Taylor Arthur again led the Lady Cards with 22 points, while Emily Clonce tossed in nine. Snyder was pleased with both girls play.

“Taylor and Emily did a good job inside tonight,” Snyder said. “I thought our size was the difference in the game.”

By the time Williamsburg (1-10) scored its first basket, at the 6:05 mark, South Laurel (5-6) was already on top 5-0. Williamsburg wouldn’t score again until there was 4:07 left in the half, on a layup by Kacie Brown. That made the score 21-4. Arthur and Clonce accounted for 13 of South’s 15 second quarter points.

Even though South’s offense struggled in the third quarter, scoring just eight points, the Lady Cards still led after three, 40-24.

A Madyson Morris three, followed by a basket by Arthur, and the lead was 45-24 with 5:31 left in the game. South again struggled to find the basket, scoring just four more points as Williamsburg ended the game with a 12-4 run.

“We’ve got to get to the point where we finish off teams,” Snyder said. “We’ve not shown that yet.”

The Lady Cards are now off until December 27 when they will host the Candy Cane Classic.
