LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
ONEIDA—The North Laurel Lady Jaguars got back into the win column with a 67-40 decision at Oneida Baptist on Saturday. The loss ended a nine-game losing streak for the Lady Jaguars, who had not won since Dec. 6 against Jackson County.
“The first half I thought we played pretty poorly. The second half we improved and then we let up toward the end of the ballgame,” North Laurel coach Eddie Mahan said.
The Lady Mountaineers led early in the first quarter and were within 12-11 with 37 seconds in the first quarter. North Laurel then went on an 11-0 run beginning with an Ashley Wyatt layup to close the first quarter. The Lady Jaguars’ 32-15 lead at halftime was their largest lead of the first half.
“We did much better in the second half on the boards. We out rebounded them quite a bit in the second half, which led to quite a few put backs and outlets for transition baskets,” Mahan said.
Mahan said he would like to get the same effort for a full game from his team despite who they are playing. He thought the Lady Jaguars let up at times against Oneida.
“That’s a mentality of an average team and I don’t like that. I want a team that competes for four quarters,” Mahan said.
Brooke Carpenter and Kendall Ellington led the Lady Jaguars with 14 points each. Carpenter’s points mostly came from four three-pointers. Makayla Sexton with 13 points, Ashley Wyatt 12, and Hannah Gray with 10 were also in double figures.
Madison Kehler led OBI with 25 points, which included five three-pointers. Kehler scored 21 points in the second half.
“It definitely felt like there was a weight off of us,” Mahan said. “Then we got two great freshman game wins against South. It was a good day for our program. We were able to utilize that game as a boost. I know our future is bright.”
