LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
MANCHESTER—Three local team were still alive in the Area 2 9-10 boys tournament at Clay County after Monday night’s games.
North Laurel Green has won two games by a combined score of 36-3 and awaits Corbin White in the finals of the winner’s bracket at 7 p.m. Thursday.
South London Red and South London White were scheduled to play games Tuesday in the loser’s bracket, against Clay County and Corbin Red.
Here are the results of the tournament so far:
Clay County 15, North Laurel Blue 1
The Clay County bats were too much as the North Blue team was knocked out of the tournament with a 15-1 loss.
Clay County scored every inning, starting with a three-run first. The only Clay County hit in the inning was a lead off single by Justin Begley. Begley ended the night 4-for-4 with a hit on the first pitch he saw each at bat.
Most of the damage in the first inning was done by three walks, a hit batter, and an error.
Clay County began to pull away with seven runs in the second inning. There were a pair of errors and a walk in the inning, but Clay County also began to drive the ball.
Begley led off the inning with a double and Jacob Hall just missed a home run. Hall’s drive hit midway up the centerfield fence. Clay County’s six hits in the inning also included a triple by Hunter Henson.
Clay County made it 14-0 in the third inning. Tyler Preston drove in two runs with a double and Begley followed with a two-run single.
Henson’s RBI single in the fourth inning closed out the scoring for Clay County.
North Blue’s first base runner came in the third inning when Jon McCowan was hit by a pitch. Their only other runner came on a fourth inning walk, which did lead to their only run.
Corbin White 11, South White 0
Corbin scored nine runs with two outs in the third inning to hand South White its first tournament loss.
It looked like a close game early with South White’s Chance Wyatt matching Corbin White’s Cade Cooney almost pitch for pitch.
Corbin White did scratch out a run in the first inning behind a lead off walk to Garner Chandler. Chandler stole second and then went to third on an error. That allowed Steven Manon to drive in the run with a fielder’s choice.
South White would be hitless until a bunt single by Micah Anders in the third inning. By the time they got another hit it would be too late.
Cooney walked to lead off the second inning for Corbin White. He stole second and scored on an error. Corbin White got singles from Manon and Ben Phillips. A walk to Cody Cox loaded the bases. It looked like Wyatt might escape when he fanned the next two batters. Instead an error that could have ended the inning allowed two runs to score. Hostettler took over on the mound and walked Brody Skinner to reload the bases. Chandler singled to drive in two more runs. Cooney walked, which led to another pitching change.
Things didn’t go much better for Cameron Allen. Two more walks were followed by an RBI single for Cody Cox. Two runs would score on an error and a walk as Corbin White sent 16 batter to the plate in the third inning.
