South rolls over Whitley County

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — WILLIAMSBURG— Since dropping its first game of the season on Sept. 9 against Madison Central, Todd White’s South Laurel Lady Cardinals have responded in fine fashion.

The Lady Cardinals are now 3-0 since the loss while outscoring their opponents 24-3 during the process, including Tuesday’s 10-0 win over district foe Whitley County.

“We are playing well right now,” White said. “We were able to do some things today and managed to get the win.”

It took a few minutes for South Laurel to get things going offensively, but once the Lady Cardinals did, it was hard for the Lady Colonels (4-6) to stop them.

The state’s leading goal scorer, Karli Parker, started things off for South Laurel by scoring the game’s first two goals while a goal by Kristen White just 10 minutes into the contest gave her team a commanding 3-0 edge.

Parker added her third goal of the game a few minutes later, and by the time halftime rolled around, South Laurel’s lead had grown to 6-0.

She finished the contest with five goals, and now has a state-best 35 on the season.

“It’s tough to go out there and get on a roll - I believe we might have been a bit overconfident,” White said. “They gave us a lot of spacing, and we finally took advantage of that.

“Our effort was there,” he added. “We were without Meredith (McCowan) and I believe that hurt us in the midfield a bit. We managed to make some adjustments and managed to get the win. I believe we played into their strategy early, but once we got use to the space, we really began to score goals.”

The Lady Cardinals put the game away just two and a half minutes into the second half, thanks to a barrage of goals.

“We started passing better and we continued to play hard,” White said. “That’s the biggest thing. We never did quit out there.

“It’s good to come out and get a win,” White said. “Hopefully we can get Meredith back against Lafayette for Thursday because they are a good team. Their record might now show it, but their strength of schedule is through the roof.”

Julie Fouts scored two goals in the South Laurel win while Haley House, White and Shelby Davis each added one apiece.
