LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
Coming into Saturday’s game with East Carter, the South Laurel Lady Cardinals were 1-3-1 over their last five games and looking for a win in the season finale to not only send their seniors out victorious on Senior Day but also get a little momentum going heading into the district tournament at North Laurel.
They got just that, edging East Carter, 4-3, behind four goals from Karli Parker, giving her 43 on the season.
“It was good to beat a team out of the 16th Region because that’s who this region will play in the first round of the state tournament,” Coach Todd White said. “East Carter is one of the top teams in the 16th, so if everything works out we could have a rematch with them if we both advance.”
It was East Carter scoring first before South Laurel came back to take a 2-1 lead. South was called for a handball, which gave East Carter a penalty kick to tie the match 2-2 at the half. Two of East Carter’s three goals came from the spot.
“We had a good talk with the team at the half,” White said.
Thirteen seconds into the second half Parker scored to give her team a 3-2 lead. She added another to make it 4-2 before East Carter scored on another penalty kick to make the final 4-3.
“East Carter is a decent team that looked to work and possess the ball, kind of like us,” White said. “It was good to get this win to get some confidence. We were short on the bench and hopefully we will get some of those players back before district starts.”
Prior to the game, South seniors Logan Joyce, Baily Miller, Sierra Forbes and Amy Fouts were honored. Fouts tore her ACL in practice last week and will miss the remainder of the season.
“We survived two penalty kicks and won,” White said. “We needed to get back on the winning track.”
South Laurel will take on Whitley County in the first round of the district tournament October 14 at 5:30 p.m.
