LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
SOMERSET—The North Laurel boy’s soccer team was a little late to The Plains on Monday evening due to the Jaguars’ bus getting stuck in a ditch on its way to Southwestern High School.
Once the match got underway, the Jags couldn’t pull it out —not the bus, but the game.
In a downpour for much of the night, Southwestern’s Chris Orantes headed in a shot to give his club a 1-0 advantage over North Laurel with just over 17 minutes left on the clock, while his teammate Anand Prabbu tacked on some much-needed insurance with 5:45 remaining, helping Sean McBride’s club notch a 2-0 victory on a nasty night on a rain-soaked and slippery field.
“The reason we were in this game tonight was because of our keeper Jordan Jones,” stated a very pleased coach McBride, after his club moved to 8-3-2 on the season with the win.
“He simply played awesome for us the entire game tonight, especially in this weather,” added McBride. “In this kind of weather, as a goal keeper —that’s the toughest position on the field. Every time they (North Laurel) took a shot, his body was behind the shot.”
Indeed, Jones came up big, especially late in the opening half of play when the Jags had a couple of golden opportunities with shots right in front of the net, but the Southwestern keeper turned Mark Acampa’s club away all night long.
Southwestern’s Zach Stolze also turned in a solid effort, as he assisted on both of his club’s goals, on a night when McBride and company posted yet another victory.
With the win, the Warriors ran their winning streak to four games in a row, yet despite the 8-3-2 record for the year, Southwestern isn’t seemingly getting a whole lot of respect throughout the 12th Region.
McBride for one says that’s just fine with him and his team - for now.
So coach, are you guys playing with a chip on your shoulder due to the seemingly lack of respect?
“Maybe a little bit,” stated McBride with a sly grin across his face.
Last Friday, Southwestern downed South Laurel, 1-0.
