LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
WINCHESTER—North Laurel traveled to George Rogers Clark on Saturday to take on both Knott County Central and the host Cardinals in tennis action and came away with a sweep in both boys and girls action.
North Laurel beat Clark County, 7-2, and Knott County Central, 6-1, in boys’ action, while in girls, the Lady Jaguars won over Knott Co. Central, 6-2, and Clark County, 8-0.
“Today was a great day for the girls picking up two wins over Clark and Knott Co. Central,” coach Bobby Smith said. “ We’ve always had tough battles with Knott Co. Central in the past (5-4 wins the past two years), but they’re not quite as deep as in the past and they were without one of their top players like us. I was happy for Taylor (Hubbard) and Casey (Stenger) having a good day at the bottom of the lineup, and Makara (Prichard) remained unbeaten for the season. Kendra (Smallwood) had two close losses vs. Knott, but I was very pleased with her effort. King and Cornett will probably be the top seed in doubles in the 14th Region, and I thought we played very well against them. That should give Kendra and Brynna (Ryle) some confidence that they hung in there with a quality team like that.” The North duo fell, 8-5.
Smith was pleased that he got to play several boys in the wins over Clark and Knott Co. Central.
“We were able get all 11 guys that made the trip some playing time,” Smith said. “And pick up two wins in the process.”
On Friday, North Laurel played host to Middlesboro, falling in both boys and girls action.
The boys lost, 5-4, while the girls fell, 6-3.
“This was a tough loss for the boys,” Smith said. “We had to reschedule this one because of weather and thus were without our top player (Arjun Kanthawar). Do we win the match with Arjun? Yes, we do. But the other team doesn’t care that you don’t have your best player, so you still have to find a way to win the match. We put ourselves in position to win the match on a few courts, and we just didn’t get it done. Give Middlesboro credit - they had a bunch of scrappers and they deserved to win the match. I admired how their boys competed, and we definitely earned our loss.”
Smith said his girls’ team got themselves in a hole early and never got out.
“We got ourselves in a hole with winning two of the singles matches,” Smith said. “I knew we’d have to split the singles to have a decent chance of winning the match. Caroline (Moore) is out currently and that doesn’t help matters. Kendra (Smallwood) and Brynna (Ryle) have the potential to be a good doubles team. We got an unlucky break in the first set when they hit the tape and dropped one over when we had set point. If we get that first set, it could have been a whole different story. Makara (Prichard) was the star of the day picking up wins in both singles and doubles.”
The Jaguars match at Corbin Monday was postponed, and North was scheduled to travel to Whitley County Tuesday night.
