LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
CORBIN—The Corbin Lady Redhounds scored first during Thursday’s showdown with unbeaten South Laurel, but the Lady Cardinals took over from there as they grabbed the 7-1 win.
It’s tough to imagine an undefeated team could need a wake-up call, but Todd White’s gave Corbin credit for a tough battle that he said may have been just what his team needed.
“We had played a lot of finesses teams and I don’t think we were ready for the physical style that Corbin brought,” White said. “They came out and played well early and scored the first goal and I think that may have woke our girls up and let them know they were going to have to earn the win.”
Corbin’s Morgan Boggs put her team on top with a goal in the third minute of play, but that was all the offense the Lady Redhounds could muster.
South Laurel’s Karli Parker added three goals in the match, two within a minute of each other in the first half, bringing her state-best total to 21 on the season.
Meredith McCowan added two goals and Kristen White and Holly Smith each added one.
South Laurel led 3-1 at halftime and stretched the lead to 7-1 by the time all was said and done to improve to 6-0-1 on the season.
