Lancaster sets new Corvette speed record

Covers 1/4 mile in 9.43 seconds at Beech Bend Raceway

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — For the past couple of years London’s Eric Lancaster has been traveling to many different states in his attempt to set a new world Corvette ZR1 speed record.

In the end, he didn’t even need to leave Kentucky, as he accomplished this feat at Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green, which ironically is also known as the Corvette Capital of the World the weekend of Sept. 6-8.

“I’ve been chasing this record for a couple of years with this car,” Lancaster said.

Lancaster set the record of 9.43 seconds for the quarter mile at 149 miles per hour with his 2010 ZR1. He did this on the first day of racing. This was also his first time competing in the Holley LS Fest at Beech Bend.

“Friday was Test N Tune for LS Fest and I ran a new personal best of 9.52 (147 mph) that day,” Lancaster said. “It wasn’t until Saturday morning before qualifying that I set the record. My car is just a street car and because of my times I was paired up with race cars that were certified to run at the NHRA track. After I made my first qualifying pass I was asked not to make any more passes at the track for insurance reasons because my car didn’t have a roll cage in it.”

Lancaster has been racing for 15 years, all as an amateur. “I’m a weekend warrior,” he noted.

Lancaster and a couple of friends modified the Corvette for racing in his garage and he said it’s rewarding to knock off cars from the bigger garages. He also holds the record for the fastest 1/8 mile in its category. He will be featured in an upcoming issue of GM Hightech magazine.

Now Lancaster has set his sights on the current Corvette 1/4 mile record, which is held by Jared Cocanougher, owner of Race Proven Performance in Harrodsburg and a close friend of Lancaster’s.
