Whitley County sweeps South Laurel, 3-0

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Had the first set gone her team’s way, South Laurel coach Mitzi Jones feels the outcome of Tuesday’s match with Whitley County might have been different.

In a tight first set, Whitley County came away with a 25-23 win. That loss seemed to take the wind of out South’s sails, as they dropped the next two sets, 25-9, 25-15, to fall 3-0 to the Lady Colonels.

“In big games, like tonight and against Corbin and North Laurel, we come out and play a strong first set, but after that, we can’t get it out of their heads that we lost,” Jones said. “I’ll be happy once we get over that.”

South Laurel (3-9-0, 0-2-0) took control early in the first set behind the serves of Savannah Baxter and Kelsey Parsons, and led 11-9 before Whitley County (12-4-0, 2-0-0) started its comeback.

The first set saw seven ties, the last being at 23-23, before an ace by Kelsey Osborne, followed by another point, gave Whitley County the first set, 25-23.

The second set was all Whitley County. After it took the lead to 4-3, the Lady Colonels continued to stretch the score out en route to a 25-9 win.

The third set was close early with eight ties, the last at 13-13, before Whitley County went on a 12-2 run to end the set and take the win, 25-15.

“We’ve got to grow up,” Jones said. “Our passes were horrible. They have been the last few matches. Whitley County had some hard hitters, but we’ve got to prepare for that.”

The Lady Cards will participate in the Lady Rocket Invitational this weekend at Rockcastle County.
