LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
Coach Mitzi Jones feels like all her team needs is that one big win to get over the hump.
She had hoped that would come against Corbin, but it didn’t, as the Lady Redhounds swept South Laurel in three sets, 25-15, 25-15, 25-14.
“I thought we would win tonight,” Jones said. “I thought we were ready to play. We had a couple of bad things happen and just couldn’t get over it.”
Each set was close to start with, but Corbin was able to pull away midway through to win with ease. In the second set, for example, there were six ties before Corbin, behind the serve of Cheyenne Johnson, reeled off eight straight points to take a 19-13 lead en route to the 25-15 win.
The third set saw Corbin race out to a 5-1 lead before South Laurel battled back to tie the set at 7-7 on a kill by Savannah Baxter. Then with Maegen Niece serving, South scored three straight points for an 11-8 lead. The Lady Cards held that lead until Corbin tied it up at 12-12. From there, Corbin outscored South, 13-2, to take a 25-14 win and the match.
“The ability is there,” Jones said. “It’s just in their heads. I knew Corbin would be a tough game. We played hard but just not hard enough.”
South Laurel traveled to Jackson County Thursday night and will play in the First Priority Tournament at Whitley County tonight and Saturday.
