LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
Sometimes there isn’t a whole lot you can do.
North Laurel trailed 3-0 about 10 minutes into Monday’s game with George Rogers Clark. The lead grew to 7-0 by halftime. Clark scored their 10th goal with 17:31 to play to end the game by Mercy Rule.
“You just have to learn to let it go. Dismiss it. It’s over and you can’t change it,” North Laurel coach Becki Woodworth said.
It was the fifth loss in six games for North Laurel. The one break in the losing streak was a 2-2 tie with Garrard County. It was a streak that started with a 10-0 loss to South Laurel and they hope will end with this 10-0 loss. For the Lady Cardinals it completed a September without a loss. There have been five wins and three ties for Clark since losing Aug. 26 to West Jessamine.
The sharp-passing Lady Cardinals were focused from the beginning, while Woodworth thought her team lacked energy. North Laurel hopes to add energy for their final three games by adding players that have been out with injuries.
“We have some real important games coming up. We have Middlesboro (Tuesday) and then we have Somerset and Pulaski County. I think those three games are definitely going to lead us in the right direction and prepare us to face Corbin on (October) 15th,” Woodworth said. “We’ve just got to forget that this ever happened.”
When powerhouse teams like Clark and East Jessamine were placed on the schedule there was no way to know how the season would unfold. The East Jessamine game was cancelled because the Lady Jaguars were too crippled by injuries to field 10 players.
“I think about not scheduling them after it’s too late,” Woodworth said. “Coming into this year I felt like we could compete with this team. As injuries mounted, etc. There is nothing you can do about it.”
Also, if the players can get past what is on the scoreboard, they can learn from top-tier teams.
“It’s good for our girls to see how soccer can be played,” Woodworth said.
Every Clark County pass had a purpose. Every pass was made to the area with least resistance whether it was backwards, forwards, or sideways.
“They are a good team and we knew that coming in. I honestly feel like we could have played them tougher than that, but we did not have any energy,” Woodworth said. “We’ve just got to let it go and move on.”
