LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — MCKEE—Even though her team won 3-0 over Bell County in the opening round of the 13th Region volleyball tournament at Jackson County Saturday, Coach Mitzi Jones wasn’t pleased with her team’s performance.

“Overall I was not happy with our play,” Jones said. “Even though a lot of people didn’t expect us to be here, we didn’t come out and play as well as we had been playing.”

The start of the first set certainly looked like South was playing well as the Lady Cards raced out to a 21-9 lead before having to hold on for the 25-18 win.

“I think nerves played a role in that,” Jones said.

The second set started out with Bell County taking a 4-0 lead before South, behind the serving of Kaylee Norvell, battled back to tie the set at 5-5. Jones said serving was a strong point during the match.

“Kaylee missed a couple of serves she usually doesn’t,” Jones said of her daughter. “But she made up for that with some aces.”

The two teams continued to trade points, and South was trailing, 16-14, when Norvell took over serving. She served three straight aces to give her team a 17-16 lead, a lead they would never relinquish in taking the second set, 25-19. The set ended with a nice set by Kristen Rickett that resulted in a kill by Whitney Wilt.

South again trailed early in the third set, and when a ball dropped between two players for a Bell County point and a 6-2 lead, Jones called a time out and told her team that at this point in the season there was no reason for any miscommunication.

Rickett served two aces during a 5-0 run for South that gave the Lady Cards a 9-7 lead. The set would be tied, 10-10, before South took control en route to the 25-15 win and a 3-0 sweep.

“We had no communication,” Jones said. “At this point in the season that shouldn’t happen. We will have to regroup and come out Monday.”

The Lady Cards faced Jackson County in the semifinals Monday night.
