Somerset surprises North Laurel, 3-1

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — SOMERSET—Somerset volleyball kicked off its season on Tuesday night getting a win against North Laurel at home. The Lady Jumpers won 3-1(25-18, 25-21, 22-25, 25-23).

This was the first time in four seasons that Somerset started off with a win.

"I was very happy with the way that my girls started the season off tonight," stated coach Kelly Venters. "These girls have worked very hard in the off season playing some travel ball and conditioning."

“It was a really good environment for our kids,” North Laurel coach Haley Ratliff said. “We’ll learn from this and hopefully get better as a team from here.”

In the first game the Lady Jumpers were able to get the lead early and hold on to it for a while. Their largest lead was eight with a score of 12-4 including a 10-2 run. The Lady Jaguars were able to fight their way back into the game and tie it at 14 all.

Somerset regained the lead and went on a 5-0 run making the score 19-14.

An ace from Mallory Hadley got the Lady Jumpers started on this run. Kaitlyn Moore also contributed to the win in the first set with an ace and two kills. Somerset won the first set 25-18.

The second set was close throughout the entire match the lead shifted sides four times. North Laurel started the set off with a 5-0 run but Somerset tied it up at 6 all.

Aubrey Kelley started the comeback with a kill and a block. The Lady Jumpers got their first lead 7-6 but allowed another tie at 11 all. Somerset was once again able to gain control of the lead at 12-11 but the Lady Jaguars tied it immediately after at 12 all.

Again Somerset was able to keep the lead but North Laurel tied the score at 16 all. The Lady Jaguars stayed close but trailed for the rest of the set, Somerset won 25-21.

"This was a big game tonight and overall for the first game of the season

I think they played great," Venters remarked. "There is plenty of room for improvement but I am pleased."

In the third set the Lady Jumpers started off with the lead but allowed North Laurel to tie them at two all. The Lady Jaguars controlled the lead for the rest of the game allowing somerset to stay close and tie a couple of times. The Lady Jumpers lost set three 25-22.

In the fourth set the Lady Jumpers fought hard to end the game. Both teams had several long rallies and Somerset held onto the lead until North Laurel tied at 21 all. The Lady Jaguars took the lead at 22-21. Somerset tied them at 23 all with a kill by Kristen Moore. The Lady Jumpers took the lead at 24-23 forcing North Laurel to call a timeout. The Lady Jaguars carried the ball and Somerset won 25-23.
