North Laurel leaves 10 runners on base in 10-2 loss to Corbin

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — CORBIN—After opening the 11-12 year old district tournament by scoring 14 runs in a win over Tri-City, North Laurel’s offense suddenly sputtered, scoring three runs over its last two games, including a 10-2 loss to Corbin Friday that eliminated them from the tournament.

“We left too many runners on base,” coach Lincoln Schott said. “We had our opportunities but our bats were still cold from last night (a 9-1 loss to Knox County).” North stranded 10 runners on base in the loss to Corbin.

North Laurel took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when, with one out, Landon Young singled off Noah Taylor and later scored on a single by Landon Schott. North stranded two runners in the inning as a sign of things to come.

Corbin responded with two runs in the second and third innings to take a 4-1 lead off pitcher Jared Gay.

A one-out double by Nate Steely, followed by an RBI single from Grant Gibson, tied the game at 1-1. Braden Dickerson reached on a fielder’s choice and scored when Chase Estep singled to center for a 2-1 lead. North again left two runners on base in the bottom of the inning.

Two more Corbin runs in the third upped the lead to 4-1. Steely drove in Brendan Heneger and later scored on a double by Gibson.

North got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning when, with one out, Casey Bargo singled and scored on a double by Hunter Bowling.

Corbin then took control of the game, scoring four runs in the top of the fourth to push its lead to 8-2 off new pitcher Hunter Nantz.

North left two runners on base in the bottom of the inning and one in the fifth inning.

Corbin’s final two runs came courtesy of a two-run homer off the bat of Lucas Heneger to make it 10-2.

North was looking to rally in the bottom of the inning when, with two outs, Young walked and Cade Harbin reached on an error. But Gay grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.

“I think last night’s loss took the wind out of our sails,” Schott said. “We had a few errors that we normally don’t have. I’m very proud of this team. Everyone contributed and they are fabulous kids. I believe the  better team is going home.”
