More Wayne in forecast for North Laurel

Lady Jags fall to Lady Cards in 3 sets; faced them again in this past weekend’s McCreary Tournament

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — After opening the season with two wins and a hard-fought loss to Corbin, North Laurel could not slow down Wayne County Thursday. The Lady Jaguars fell in straight sets 25-12, 25-20, and 25-13.

“We came out flat tonight. I don’t know what it was. I don’t know if they had a bad day at school or what, but everybody was down,” North Laurel coach Ali Ray said.

The Lady Jaguars had a single kill by Ashley Wyatt and one ace from Brooke Carpenter in a sluggish first set.

“They are a good team. They have a lot of hitters and we just had trouble setting anything up or getting anything going at the net,” Ray said.

The Lady Jaguars did battle in the second set, led by three kills from Miranda Browning. The score was tied at 18-18 before a tip put the Lady Cardinals ahead for good. A Wyatt kill had North Laurel within 21-19. They were again within two points at 22-20 on a kill by Marsha Boggs. The Lady Cardinals ended the set with three straight points.

“We had a couple of missed serves. Again we just couldn’t get anything set up to get anything going. We were just trying to keep the ball in play,” Ray said.

Wayne County jumped ahead 4-0 in the final set and pushed the lead to 7-1. The Lady Jaguars were never able to challenge from there. The closest they came was 14-10 when Wayne County sailed two straight kill attempts out of bounds.

“Our passes weren’t very good. They have some really good servers and we had a hard time handling it,” Ray said.

The Lady Jaguars were scheduled to get another look at Wayne County in the first round of the McCreary County Invitational Tournament over the weekend. The Lady Cardinals were scheduled to be North Laurel’s first round opponent, followed by matches with Barren County, and Monticello.
