Several from Laurel named to All-District football team

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Nine county players have been named to the All-District Football Team.

North Laurel placed six players on the team, while South contributed with three.

Michael Nelson, Gabe Blair, Rashawn Andrews, Jake McFadden, Cole Lewis and Josh Velasco were the Jaguars named to the team. Those six helped North Laurel to a 6-5 record and its first playoff appearance since 2004.

Nelson and Blair led the offensive attack with both players rushing for more than 1,000 yards. Nelson rushed for 1,340 yards and 23 touchdowns, while Blair added 1,161 yards and four TDs. McFadden and Lewis also contributed on offense, mostly as receivers. McFadden caught five passes for 123 yards and a score, and Lewis caught 17 passes for 411 yards and six scores. Andrews and Velasco were mainstays on the defensive side of the ball.

Austin Schaser, Josh Phelps and Jason Mitchell were the representatives from South Laurel. In Schaser’s first year of football, he was strong force on the defense, where he was named the Defensive MVP of South’s win over Lynn Camp in the Cumberland Valley Bowl.

Phelps was also a strong force on defense and one of the Cardinals leading tacklers, dropping opposing quarterbacks for several sacks. He was also used late in the season as a running back.

Mitchell was South’s most consistent offensive threat for most of the season both as a wide receiver and a punt and kickoff returner. He also contributed on defense. He caught 34 passes in eight games for 374 yards for an average of 11 yards per catch and four touchdowns. He also carried the ball 26 times for 296 yards and four touchdowns and returned 12 kickoffs for 361 yards and two touchdowns. On defense he had 23 tackles, two interceptions and one fumble recovery.
