Margaret Elizabeth Griffin Fouts

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Margaret Elizabeth Griffin Fouts, 93, loving wife of John David “J.D.” Fouts (deceased), passed away on Dec. 16, 2013 at Panorama City Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center in Lacey, Wash.

Margaret is survived by her three daughters, Nancy Lee Fouts (London, England), Susan Fouts Sentner (Bow, Wash.,) and Martha Craft Fouts (Dallas, Texas). She is also survived by sister-in-law, Elizabeth Parks Griffin (London, Ky.); six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; six nieces and two nephews.

Margaret was born June 22, 1920 in Richmond, Ky. She grew up in East Bernstadt, Ky., graduating from East Bernstadt High School in 1938. She attended Bethel College for two years and then went on to graduate from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn., in 1942.

She married her sweetheart J.D. Fouts, May 24, 1944, and moved from Kentucky all the way to Washington State. Little did she know at the time that this would prove to be a short-distance relocation. In 1962 J.D. accepted a position with U.S.A.I.D. to Ghana. The couple spent the next 13 years overseas, in Ghana, Ethiopia, Bangkok, and Vietnam.

This began Margaret’s lifelong passion for traveling and making friends all over the globe.

Margaret and J.D. retired to Lacey, Wash., in 1976, and continued to travel extensively until J.D.’s death in 1992. Margaret stayed active for another 17 years with travel, needlework, bead collecting, quilting, reading, junking, staying in touch with old friends while always making new ones.

She will be long remembered and sorely missed.

Donations in Margaret’s memory may be made to the Panorama Foundation, 1751 Circle Lane SE, Lacey, Wash., 98503.
