LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Ward Gaines, 90, London, Ky., passed away Friday, Aug. 2, 2013.
A native of Laurel County, he was born Nov. 20, 1922, the son of the late George and Lou Sutton Gaines.
He was united in marriage to Louise Schott, his wife of 68 years, who survives. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Margaret Schott Gaines; several special nieces and nephews, plus a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his passing.
Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by six brothers, Walter, Chester, George, John, Rufus and Charles Gaines, plus three siblings who died in infancy.
He served his community well by being on the Board of Directors of the East Bernstadt Fire Department for over 40 years, a member of the Optimist Club, and a member of the St. John’s Reformed Church where he served as song leader for several years.
He was also a member of the gospel recording group, The London Christianaires. He was retired from Laurel Grocery Company as a sales representative.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 5 at Bowling Funeral Home with Larry Rich and Jimmy Williams officiating. Burial followed in the St. John’s Reformed Cemetery, East Bernstadt.
Pallbearers were Randy, Lincoln and Roger Schott, Bob Lincks, Michael Hinkle and Jerry Kindred.
Visitation was from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
