Vergie Melton

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Vergie Melton, 80, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Corbin.

She was born Nov. 20, 1932, in Perry County, Ky., the daughter of the late Gordon and Dora Boggs Whitaker.  

She was united in marriage to Henderson Melton, who preceded her in death.  

She was a homemaker, a retired elementary school cook and a member of the Lily Church of Christ.

Survivors include four children,  Sophia Eversole of Hamilton, Ohio, Judy Melton and Henderson Ray Melton, both of London, and Loretta Morgan of Nancy; six sisters, Maurine Johnson of London, Wanda Williams of Smilax, Emma Bingham of Alabama, Mollie Coots of Wooten,  Etta Young of London, and Evelyn Begley of Leatherwood; four brothers, Joe Daniel Whitaker of London, Ikie Whitaker of Panama City, Fla., Junior Young of Wooten and James Young of Hyden; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, plus a host of other friends and relatives to mourn her passing.  

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter,  Jeanette Smith;  two sisters, Mary Katherine Whitaker and Pauline Whitaker Smith; and two brothers, Gordon B. Whitaker and Bill Whitaker.

Funeral services for Vergie Melton were conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 in the Bowling Funeral Home Chapel with Reuben Shepherd officiating.  

Burial followed in the Brummett Cemetery at East Bernstadt.

Pallbearers were Eddie Eversole, Blake and Cameron Britton, Mason and David Morgan and Trevor Oakes.

The family received friends from 12 noon until the 3 p.m. funeral hour.
