LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Thelma Brown, 96, of rural Flora, Ind., passed away Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, at St Elizabeth Central Hospital, Lafayette, Ind.
She was born June 21,1917 in London the daughter of Leonard W. and Augusta (Tankisley) Brown. She was a 1939 graduate of Lily High School and a 1961 graduate of Marion College, Marion, Ind. She was an elementary school teacher, having taught at London for one year, Russiaville for two years , Camden for 12 years and Hillcrest Elementary at Delphi for 11 years and retiring in 1981.
She married Everett O. Brown on June 2, 1944 at Newport, Ky. He preceded her in death on March 28,1999.
She is survived by two sons, Kenneth “Jerry” Brown of Jacksonville, Fla., and Lynn A. Brown of rural Flora. Two grandsons and two granddaughters and nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Flossie Ernst of North Fork, Idaho, and Alma Hedger of Columbus, Ind.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
She was a member of the Camden First Baptist Church, where had served as a Sunday school teacher, The Indiana State Teachers Association, Carroll County Classroom Teachers, Indiana Retired Teachers Association, she was a charter member of the Camden Lioness Club, and member of the American Legion Auxillary at Camden.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. today, Friday Oct. 25 at Cree Funeral Home, with her son Pastor Jerry Brown officiating.
Burial will follow in the Camden Cemetery.
Family, friends and former students called Thursday after 4 p.m. at the funeral home.
