Garnett Ray Williams

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Garnett Ray Williams, 79, Somerset, Ky., resident (former Carroll County, Md. resident) died November 2, 2013, at his home in Kentucky.

Mr. Williams was born August 27, 1934 in East Bernstadt, Ky., to the late Harve L. Williams and Lucretia (Johnson-Bales) Williams.

Garnett graduated from East Bernstadt High School in 1952. He married Wilma Callahan on April 18, 1957 in Jellico, Tenn.

He served in the U.S. Air Force as an Air Traffic Controller from 1952-1956. After basic training at Lackland  AFB, San Antonio, Texas Garnett attended Technical School at Keesler AFB, Miss. His tours of duty included two years at Yakota Air Base in Japan, and Altus AFB in Oklahoma.

After his discharge, he moved to Baltimore, Md., where he was employed by Baltimore Gas and Electric as a Power Systems Operator for 33 years, retiring in 1990. Garnett lived in Carroll County, Md. for 33 years when he retired and moved to Pulaski County, Ky.

While Garnett and Wilma were raising their four children in Maryland, he was also instrumental in organizing as president and coaching boys youth basketball for nine years in the Carroll County Basketball League.

In retirement, his joy in life was spoiling his 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Garnett loved to follow University of Kentucky basketball. He also passed down a time honored tradition of attending the Kentucky High School ‘Sweet  16’ boys basketball tournament in Lexington, Ky., for 33 years, 31 years consecutively. Garnett was also very active as a Trustee on the Homecoming Committee, serving his childhood hometown in Pittsburg, Ky.

Garnett is survived by his wife, Wilma (Callahan) of Nancy, Ky.; his daughter Jeanene Williams Dombrowski and husband Randy of Alpharetta, Ga.;  sons Robert Bruce Williams and Terry Gibson both of Sykesville, Md., James Daniel Williams and wife Sheila of Orlando, Fla., and David Wayne Williams of Nancy, Ky.; a brother L.B. Williams and wife Georgia of Omaha, Nebr.; and a special nephew John Nose of London, Ky.

Grandchildren  Robby Williams, Justin Williams, Nicky Williams Rosa, David Wayne and Brittney Williams, Chad Michael Williams, Joshua Adam Williams, Rachael Marie Williams, Spencer Ray Williams, Jordan Rae Dombrowski and Connor James Williams.

Great-grandchildren, Keira Nicole Rosa, Cayden Michael and Chase Garnett Williams and Jacob Rylan Williams.

Garnett was preceded in death by his parents;  sisters, Eula V. Williams, Blanche Williams Phillips, Ruby Maude Williams, Florence Marie (Bales) Nose, Wanda Elizabeth Williams Patton (and special brother-in-law Charles Patton); and brothers Ronald Bales, Clarence Bales, Charles Williams, Herbert Arthur Williams.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8 at Bowling Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 in the chapel of Bowling Funeral Home with Noel Broughton officiating.

Burial will follow in the Hedrick Cemetery in Laurel County.

Military honors will be provided by the local DAV.
