LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
Chester Lee Doan, 90, of East Bernstadt, Ky., passed away Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012, at Laurel Heights Home for the Elderly.
Born July 28, 1922 in Pendleton, Ore., he was the son of the late P.L. Doan and Mattie Mink Doan.
He was a graduate of Bryan Stratton School of Business; 37 years US postal mail carrier; was a World War II veteran, entering the service on Dec. 14, 1942 and exited Oct. 24, 1945 as a decorated technical sergeant.
He was on the Nominating Committee of Jackson County RECC and was a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Association.
Doan enjoyed fishing, gardening, working with trees and grapevines.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Edith Doan Estes.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Smith Doan, whom he married on May 29, 1953 in Richmond, Ind.; three children, Judy Doan Vires and husband Chuck of Peachtree City, Ga., Joy Doan of Lexington, Ky., and Charles Ivan Doan and wife Amy of Palmyra, Tenn.; two sisters, Ada Doan Johnson of Versailles, Ky., and Jewell Doan Begley and husband Mark of New Richmond, Ohio; two brothers, Ivan Doan of Paducah, Ky., and Charles Doan and wife Doris of Tampa, Fla.
He is also survived by six grandchildren, Jordan and Dylan Vires; and Jade, Garrett, Madison and Peyton Doan; and one great-grandchild, Trystan C. Vires.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2 in the chapel of House-Rawlings Funeral Home with Jerry Brown officiating.
Burial will follow in the Snuffer Cemetery in East Bernstadt.
Visitation was after 6 p.m. Thursday at the funerall home.
