Reuben Daniel Mitchell

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Reuben Daniel Mitchell, 23, passed away May 1, 2014 in Lexington, Ky.  He was born on July 12, 1990 to his surviving parents, Susan Mitchell and Glenn “Buddy” Westbrook of London, Ky.

Reuben was born and raised in London. He was baptized at Saint William Catholic Church, attended Cornerstone Christian School, South Laurel High School, Southwestern High School (Somerset), and Somerset Community College. As a young adult, he lived in Ann Arbor, Mich., Frankfort, Ky. and, finally, Lexington.

He is survived by his fiancée Laura Pitman; his grandmother, Mary Katherine Mitchell of Livingston; and his very special aunt whom he considered his “other mother,” Jennifer Mitchell of Ann Arbor, Mich.

He is also survived by his siblings Joe (and Laura) Westbrook, Amy (and Tim) Semones, Robert (and Alice) Westbrook, David (and Dawn) Westbrook, Mary Perkins, Susan (and Brad) Simpson, and Leann Westbrook; aunts and uncles Darryl Mitchell, Judy Boswell, Peggy Snyder, Steve (and Jackie) Mitchell, John (and Kimberlie) Mitchell, and Virginia June.  He is also survived by his extraordinary pit bull, Georgia, who was by his side at the time of his passing.  There are many more family members and friends who will share in saying goodbye to Reuben.

Reuben was a musician. He played drums with the First United Methodist Church Praise Band in London whenever he could. He loved movies, comedy, adventure, music, cooking, pit bulls, traveling, spending time with his fiancée, family and friends.  He loved helping other people by giving them bear hugs and making them laugh. He was very generous with everything he had, especially his heart.

His arrangements were handled by London Funeral Home.

The visitation was Sunday evening May 4 at the funeral home. The funeral was held at Saint William Catholic Church in London on Monday, May 5. Fr. Charles Howell and the Rev. Wade Arp presided. Bro. Roger Bowling read the obituary.

Lunch was provided by parishioners of Saint William Catholic Church as well as a close family friend, Wayne Riley, Director of the Laurel County African American Heritage Center.

Pall bearers were Darryl Mitchell, Judy Boswell, Peggy Snyder, Steve Mitchell, David Westbrook, Mickel McDaniel, Virginia June and Josh Akra.  Honorary pallbearers were John Mitchell, Jennifer Mitchell, Roxanne Boswell, Lonnie Gipson and Cory “CK” Kirkland.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorial contributions be made to Brighton Center for Recovery, https://www.stjohnprovidence.org/Foundation/Donate/ in honor of Reuben Daniel Mitchell.
