Vada Phillips

Teacher

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Vada Phillips, 94, former Fayette County teacher, died May 6, 2012, in Stuart, Fla.

Mrs. Phillips lived on Lakeshore Drive in Lexington, but was being cared for by her son in Florida at the time of her death.

She was born March 4, 1918, in Harrison County, Ky. Her parents were Frank and Ada (Switzer) Dixon.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.

Mrs. Phillips was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and did graduate work at the University of Kentucky.

She taught school in Fayette County, Ky., for 30 years, teaching at Lafayette, Leestown Junior High and Beaumont Junior High.

During her teaching career, Mrs. Phillips was a founding member of the Professional Educators of Fayette County, serving terms as president and vice president; a board member of the Central Kentucky Education Association for five years; and a board member and president of the Fayette County Teachers Association. She was a former member of the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association.

Her husband of 60 years, the Rev. George W. Phillips, a Baptist minister, died in 1997. Mrs. Phillips was active in several Baptist churches where Rev. Phillips served as pastor. They included First Baptist in London, Ky., Twelfth Street Baptist, Paducah, Southern Heights Baptist in Lexington, and Pinckard Baptist in Versailles.

She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Lexington at the time of her death.

She is survived by two sons, Eldon Phillips, Palm City, Fla., and Leo Phillips (Jeannie), Lexington, Ky.; a grandson, Brian Phillips (Paula), Lexington, Ky., and their two children, Lilly and Brycen.

Visitation was at Milward-Southland from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

 Funeral services were at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 14 with burial at the Lexington Cemetery.
