Alice Daisy Hill Helton

Honored as one of London’s Living Treasures

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Alice Hill Helton, 94, died peacefully, on April 26, 2012, just six days shy of her 95th birthday, at Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin, Ky., surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and other family members.  

She was born in Keavy, Ky., on May 2, 1917, as the youngest child to John and Sally Ann Karr Hill.  

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Raymond Helton; a son, Herschel Helton; a daughter, Wanda Smith; two grandsons, Travis Cornett and Jason Lang; four sisters, Bertha Vaughn, Mae Hart, Susie Ellison, and Elva Bunch; and three brothers, Coy Hill, Roy Hill and Addison Hill.

She is survived by three daughters, Freda Arnold (Charles), Baldrock, Ky., Joan Lang (Don), Keavy, Ky., Debbie Cornett (Roger), Keavy, Ky.; two sons, Wayne Helton (Cathy),  and Danny Helton, both of Keavy, Ky.; 13 grandchildren, Sherri Watkins (Tim), Keavy, Ky., Barbara Howard (Chester), Keavy, Ky., Dale Helton (Amy), Dandridge, Tenn., Lisa Alexander (Randy), London, Ky., Katrina Jordan (Rob), Keavy, Ky., Chris Lang (Jaime), London, Ky., Raymond Helton (Melvonna), Winchester, Ky., Kyle Smith (Tiffany), Keavy, Ky., LaShae Sizemore (Darin), Keavy, Ky., Elizabeth Wooton (Chester), Corbin, Ky., Colby Smith, Keavy, Ky.; 18 great- grandchildren, Chistopher Howard, Brittany Howard, Brooke Watkins, Trevor Helton, Tanner Jordan, Kaitlyn Helton, Dalton Wooton, Tristan Jordan, Coy Helton, Courtney Sizemore, Emily Wooton, Rachel Alexander, Madison Smith, Autumn Smith, Cole Smith, Landon Alexander, Presley Lang, and Olivia Helton; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Helton is being honored as one of London’s Living Treasures. Her story about her life will be recorded and preserved in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and will appear in The Sentinel-Echo on May 16, 2012.

Funeral services were conducted by Hart Funeral Home in Corbin, Ky., with Bro. Randy Baker and Bro. Rob Hale officiating.  

Visitation was Saturday, April 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. with the funeral being on Sunday, April 29 at 2 p.m.  Burial followed at the Locust Grove Cemetery in Keavy, Ky.

Pallbearers were  Dale Helton, Raymond Helton, Kyle Smith, Tim Watkins, Chester Howard, Randy Alexander, Rob Jordan, Darin Sizemore, and Chris Lang.

Honorary pallbearers were  Christopher Howard, Trevor Helton, Tanner Jordan, Dalton Wooton, Tristan Jordan, Coy Helton, Cole Smith, and Landon Alexander.
