Chester Eugene “Gene” Gaines

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Chester Eugene “Gene” Gaines, 86, Ypsilanti, Mich., passed away Monday, June 03 2013, at his residence with his loving family around him.  

He was born Sept. 9, 1926, in Laurel County, Ky., the son of Chester and Thena Rose (Minton) Gaines.

On April 7, 1948 he married Louella Lawson in London, and she preceded him in death on January 12, 2011.  

Gene was a long time member of North Prospect Baptist Church in Ypsilanti, Mich.

He was employed with General Motors (Hydramatic plant) in Ypsilanti, retiring after many years of service and was a proud member of UAW Local No. 735. He was also a member of the Phoenix Lodge, No. 13 F&AM. Gene will always be remembered for his love of beekeeping and  gardening, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  

Survivors include his loving daughter, Suzanne Gaines; beloved grandchildren, Roxanne (Brian) Katke, Erin (Jason Cox) Gaines and Scott Gaines; five great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Victoria and Amelia Katke, Evan Alter and Bradyn Gaines; two sisters, Sylvia Dean and Mary Boggs; many nieces and nephews include two special nephews, Jerry Patrick and Paul Lyons; and numerous other loving family members.   

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Anita Jean Gaines; a son, Don Gaines on December 19, 1995; brother and sisters, James Gaines, Willadean Neeley, Bessie Rednour, Hazel Lyons and Nannie Boxell.   

Funeral service were celebrated Thursday, June 6, at 11 a.m. at Janowiak Funeral Home, Ypsilanti, Mich., with his nephew, the Rev. James Blaylock officiating.  

Burial with military honors followed in Marble Park Cemetery, Milan, Mich.

Contributions in his memory may be made to St. Joseph Mercy Hospice.  Envelopes were available at the funeral home where the family received friends Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m.
