Viola Bell Tompkins-Colter

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Viola Bell Tompkins-Colter, 89, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2013 in Longwood, Fla.

Viola, born in Cold Hill, Ky., on January 13, 1924 was the daughter of James Lank Tompkins and Martha Mae Lawson.

Married to Felix Stillings in 1940 and the mother of eight children, survived by seven, Gene (Margaret) Stillings, Manchester, Tenn.; Carol McCormick, Spurger, Texas, Sondra Largent, Orlando, Fla.; Dione Stillings, Fayetteville, N.C.; LaVerne (Andrew) Del Preore, Orlando, Fla.; Dennis (Jewel) Stillings, Orlando, Fla.; and Linda (Carl) Sanders, Manchester, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Wilson Bales, Cincinnati, Ohio.

 Her oldest daughter Margie Bales of Cincinnati, Ohio, sadly preceeded her in death.

Viola is also survived by three siblings, Ruby Jones, Hamilton, Ohio; Edna McQueen (John) Kentucky and Charles (Dottie) Tompkins, Fairfield, Ohio.

Active, vibrant and social, she loved life and always believed “tomorrow would be a better day.”  An avid church volunteer; she loved music, gardening and nurturing those in need.

She will be missed greatly, not only by her children, but by the lives she touched with her deep committments to faith, life and laughter.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 14 in the Bowling Funeral Home Chapel with Dale Campbell officiating. Burial followed in the Old Union Cemetery in Laurel County.

Visitation was from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
