Catherine Brown

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Catherine Brown was born Feb. 10, 1920 in London, Ky., being one of 10 children. She went to heaven on her birthday, Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013.  She had been a Christian for 79 years and was a member of the Old Salem Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruthie Chesnut and Isaac Thomas Vandeventer; and two grandsons, Darren Brown and Daniel Westerfield.

She was also, preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters, Janie Warren, Anna Proffitt, Steve Vandeventer, Laura Dunn, Mary Black, George Vandy, Maymie Scott, and Roy Vandeventer. She leaves one surviving brother, Ray Vandeventer.

She is also, survived by her husband, Russell Brown, and five children, James Edward Brown, and special friend, Brenda Meece, of Science Hill, Ky., Lois Jean and Curtis Wagers, Russell Lee and  Patty Brown, Gayetta and Dempsy Westerfield, and Eldon and Tammy Brown, all of London.

She leaves eight living grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren, and one step great-great grandson, and many relatives and friends to rejoice in her homegoing.

Catherine married Russell on Sept. 12, 1946 after Russell returned from World War II. Catherine was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and caring grandmother.

She was a homemaker and had worked as a teacher’s aid and substitute cook for the Laurel County Board of Education.

She was very skilled in sewing, quilting, and embroidery. Catherine and her sisters had quilted for people in 48 states by the time she was married.

Catherine loved to sing. She attended singing schools in her community where she learned to read music. She learned to play the pump organ as a young girl and continued to play the keyboard and piano until her last few months. She learned to play the guitar while working in Indianapolis during World War II and sang in the Cadle Tabernacle Choir which had widely- known radio broadcasts.

Her family and many friends will remember her as a kind and meek person who was always concerned about others. She visited the sick and ministered to the bereaved by taking food and helping them with chores.  Catherine could have been called the “greeting card lady” as she sent hundreds of birthday, anniversary, and get-well cards during her life. She treasured and kept all the cards and letters she had received throughout her life.

She loved gardening and raising flowers.  Watching squirrels and birds brought her much pleasure in being close to God’s creation.  She enjoyed the redbud and dogwood in the spring and was always ready to go for a ride to see the spring blooms or colorful fall foilage.

Catherine read the Bible daily for many years.  She read her Sunday School lesson even when she knew she could not attend Sunday School.  Her favorite Bible verse was: “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.”  Proverbs 22:1.

Her wish for us is that we prepare to meet her in heaven.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the House-Rawlings Funeral Home with the Rev. Craig Morgan, Rev. Donald Tackett, and Rev. Curtis Wagers officiating.

Burial followed in the Chesnut Cemetery.

The family of Catherine Brown received friends after 6  p.m. on Tuesday.
