Julia Hoffman Rose

Former head librarian at Sue Bennett College

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Julia Hoffman Rose, 89, of LaCrosse, Va., passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012.  

She was born July 18 1923 to Mamie Hoffman and Finley Gray Rose Sr. in Orangeburg, S.C. She was the twin of her late sister Ruth Rose Brewer and had one brother, the late Finley Gray Rose Jr.

 She graduated Cum Laude from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va., attended Scarritt College for Christian Missionaries and received her masters from George Peabody College.

Always an avid reader, she would become actively involved for over 30 years as head librarian at Sue Bennett College in London, Ky. She was acknowledged for her donation of a collection of rare Applachia books to the college.

She was always actively involved with theology and the United Methodist Church, missionary work, and at Rehoboth United Methodist in LaCrosse, Va. Her last missionary trip was to Samoa at the age of 73. She was a deaconess and played an very active role as lay speaker and life of service with  the United Methodist Conference.  She loved gardening and animals having grown up on the family farm.   

Miss Rose is survived by four nephews, Gray Rose of La Crosse, Va., Greg Rose of Laurel, Md., Stephen Rose also of La Crosse, Va., and John Rose of Homestead, Fla.; and several great nieces and great nephews.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, Oct. 31, at Rehoboth Methodist Church with visitation an hour  (1 p.m.) before and continuing after the service.

Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery.
