Julia Tessalene ‘Tess’ Karr Smith

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —



Julia “Tess” Smith, 87, of London, Ky. passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at Oak Tree Hospital in Corbin, Ky.

Born on Aug. 4, 1925, Julia Karr Smith was the daughter of the late Thomas and Esther Jones Karr.  She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and she was an accomplished seamstress and homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward Minor Smith; three brothers, James Karr, David Karr and Duane Karr; and a sister, Polly Etta Masters Parkey.

Survivors include a son, Tom A. (Teri) Smith and a daughter, Julia Ann Smith (Richard) Baker, both of London; three grandchildren, Joshua D. (Shana) Smith of London, Jacob D. (Aimee) Smith of Chicago, Ill., and Julia Elizabeth “Julie Beth” Baker of London.  She is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Cody A. Smith, Asher N. Smith and Gabriel S. Smith; and five sisters-in-law, Irene Martin Karr of London, Betty Karr, Doris Issacs, Louise Fenwick and Kathleen Yates, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, family and friends who will mourn her passing.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 21 at O’Neil Lawson Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Rob Hale officiating.

Burial followed in Locust Grove Cemetery in Keavy.

Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

The family would like to express deep gratitude to the nursing staff and caregivers at Baptist Health Corbin for the compassionate and tender care provided to our loved one over the past three weeks.  

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Baptist Health Corbin Foundation, 1 Trillium Way, Corbin, KY 40701.
