Big John Bowling

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Big John Bowling, 72, departed this life at Saint Joseph London on Sunday, March 31, 2013.

He was born on September 17, 1940, in Laurel County, Ky., the son of the late Sim and Nellie Barnett Bowling.  

He served as Laurel County Jailer from January 1978 to September 1988.  He was recognized for having the best jail in Kentucky and was named Jailer of the Year in 1978 and 1979.  He was a member of the McKee Lodge #144 F.&A.M. and Circle of Faith Holiness Church.

In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by four sisters,  Vernice Tankersley Watson, Mary Hodges Horne, Betty Williams and Marie Hicks; and one brother,  Paul Bowling.

He was united in marriage to Imogene Blankenship Bowling, who survives of London.  

He is also survived by five children, Toni Mancini, Barbara (Mark) Wells, Joyce (Gary) Parker, Gerald (Angie) Gregory, and Tammy Jo (fiancé Tony Fox)Bowling, all of London; 10 grandchildren, Brandi Larkey James, Hollie Dee Ancharoff, Kayley Steuber, Christis Garland, Kendell Faye Curry, Joseph and Caitlyn Gregory, Ashley and Jeremy Parker and Shanda Wooten;  nine great-grandchildren, Solomon and Lily James, Mason Garland, Karma Curry, Josiah Howard, Elias and Augustus Boggs, Rian Parker and Isabel Wooten; plus a host of other friends and relatives to mourn his passing.  

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., today Wednesday, April 3 in the Bowling Funeral Home Chapel with Gary Parker and Sammy Trosper officiating.  

Burial will follow in the McDaniel Cemetery, London.

Pallbearers are  Eric Ancharoff, Evan Steuber, Paul Eugene Bowling, Eric Bowling, Chad Curry, Kenny Hicks and Brad Wagers.

Visitation was held after 5 p.m. Tuesday at Bowling Funeral Home.

Masonic Services were also held at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
