Juanita (Hicks) Whitis

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Juanita (Hicks) Whitis, 77, wife of Berlin Whitis, of Pistol Creek Road, London, Ky., passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at UK Markey Cancer Center in Lexington.

Born July 6, 1936 in Laurel County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Melvin and Ollie (Proffitt) Hicks.

She was a cafeteria worker for the Laurel County Board of Education, and a member of New Salem Baptist Church, Laurel County.

She is survived by her husband; four children, Carvel Whitis and wife Tammy of Manchester, Ky., Calvin Whitis and wife Jenny of Lexington, Ky., Darlene Roberts and husband Roy of London,  and Irene Patton and husband Joey of East Bernstadt; five siblings, Faye Hinkle, Gayetta Foister, and Gary Wayne Hicks all of Hamilton, Ohio, Gretha Westerfield of London, and Glida Morgan of Corbin; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Charles Glen Hicks and Winford Hicks; and a sister, Jeanette Haynes.

Funeral service for Juanita (Hicks) Whitis will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, May 9 in the chapel of London Funeral Home with Brother Wayne House and Brother Jeff Maggard officiating.

Burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery, Laurel County.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Whitis, Jared Whitis, Chase Whitis, Austin Roberts, Jake Roberts, Josh Patton and Chuck McKnight.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Johnson, Calvin Henson and Alonzo Hicks.

The family of Juanita (Hicks) Whitis received friends at London Funeral Home after 6 p.m. on Thursday.
