LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
If you haven’t been watching the NHL playoffs, then you are missing what is probably the best post season in all of sports.
So far this post season has had a little bit of everything, and a whole lot of excitement.
Through Monday there has been 22 games played, with only two series looking to be over in four games. Of those 22 games, seven have gone to overtime, including the first two games in the Boston-Washington series. The Bruins took game three Monday night with a thrilling 4-3 win. This series has been very entertaining to watch as Boston looks to repeat as Stanley Cup champions.
If you want upsets, then look no further than the Vancouver-Los Angeles series. The Canucks came into the series as the team with the most points throughout the entire season, yet the Kings are holding a 3-0 lead. Vancouver finished the regular season with 111 points to finish first in the Western Conference. In contrast, the Kings had 95 points and finished in eighth place.
And if you want just flat out we don’t like each other, hard checking, punch throwing series, then check out the battle of Pennsylvania as the Philadelphia Flyers hold a 3-0 lead against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
If the Pens lose this series, they can blame no one but themselves. They led 3-0 in game one before falling 4-3 in overtime. In game two, Pittsburgh had a 3-1 lead before falling 8-5. And Sunday, they again scored the first goal before losing, 8-4. In that game, not only were 12 goals scored but also three players tossed in the first period only.
St. Louis-San Jose, New York-Ottawa, New Jersey-Florida, Nashville-Detroit and Chicago-Phoenix are battling in exciting series. This has been a great hockey post season so far.
I know a lot of people don’t like watching hockey on TV, and I can understand the frustration, as the puck is hard to follow. The game is much better viewed live. But for sheer excitement, you can’t beat the NHL playoffs.
Give it a chance. You might find yourself becoming a fan.
