Direct Kick: Wild weekend in college football

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Wow, what a stunner of a weekend in college football. Several of the top teams fell and when the dust settled, Alabama was No. 1 in the first BCS standings, which comes as no surprise.

What did come as a surprise is Florida State being ranked No. 2. The Seminoles leap frogged Oregon after thrashing Clemson, 51-14, Saturday night. Well, so much for my prediction last week of an Alabama-Clemson national title game. The Tigers always seem to choke in the big game.

I have to admit that the Seminoles were impressive in their dismantling of the Tigers. Are they for real? They sure looked that way to me Saturday night. By the way, last week I misspelled Dabo Swinney’s name in this column. Sorry about that coach.

The surprises started Friday night when then-No. 8 Louisville lost to the University of Central Florida, 38-35, thus ending any Heisman hopes of quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. That loss dropped the Cardinals all the way down to No. 20 in the BCS poll.

UCLA, LSU, South Carolina, Texas A & M and Georgia were also upset victims on Saturday. While the Bruins lost to another ranked team, Stanford, LSU, South Carolina and Georgia all lost to unranked SEC opponents in Ole Miss, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Auburn’s win jumped them from No. 24 to No. 11 in the BCS.

Missouri and Baylor, both undefeated, jumped into the BCS Top 10 at 5 and 7 respectively. Oregon is No. 3 and Ohio State, No. 4. Stanford (6), Clemson (9) and Texas Tech (10) round out the Top 10.

If this past weekend is any indication of the remainder of the season, then we are in for a wild ride.
