A record performance

Home run in 7-2 win over Garrard Co. makes Lauren Wombles South Laurel's all-time leader in hits

LANCASTER—When Lauren Wombles smacked a two-run homer in the first inning, it not only gave the South Laurel Lady Cardinals an early lead on host Garrard Co., but it also made Wombles the all-time hit’s leader at South Laurel.

Wombles now has 255 hits, passing Jessica Hoskins’ old record of 254 as the South Laurel Lady Cardinals downed Garrard Co. 7-2.

“We played well,” assistant coach Larry Smith said. “We came ready to play.”

In the top of the third, an Emily Gaines double gave her 21 for the season, which ties the current state record. Also in the game Johnna Sizemore picked up her 150th hit, becoming only the 12th person in South Laurel history with that many hits.

Morgan Johnson doubled to center in the top of the first, which brought Wombles to the plate, and the senior shortstop smacked a two-run homer for an early 2-0 lead.

It stayed that way until the fourth, when the Lady Cards added four more runs to up the lead to 6-0. Gaines led off with a double to left, and moved to third on a Johnson single. Johnson then stole second, and Wombles drew a walk to load the bases for Porsha Justice.

Justice then singled in Gaines, and Sizemore followed with a single that brought Johnson home. Kelsey Jervis kept the single parade going, knocking in Wombles. Cassie Blair (running for Justice) scored on a sacrifice by Candace Kirby.

Garrard Co. scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, but South got one of those runs back in the top of the fifth as Taylor Martin singled and scored on a single by Gaines to make the final 7-2.

Justice picked up the complete game win, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out three.

The Lady Cards were scheduled to host Estill Co. last night, and will participate in the Boyle Co. Invitational this weekend.
